Top Tips For Choosing Your Wedding Cake From The Vintage Cake Fairy
Tis the season to be jolly (and eat copious amounts of cake).
While tiers are probably the last thing you want to hear about right now, we promise you’ll be interested in these sweeter ones…
Christmas is the perfect time to start thinking about your wedding cake – namely because you can do a fair bit of market research when there’s festive feasting on the go.
But don’t dive straight in for the jugular – although you might want to – there’s a few things you need to consider before you order your wedding cake.
Where will you get it from? How much should I spend? When do I need to order it? And perhaps the more important questions – what flavour will you go for? how many tiers should it be?
We’ve enlisted the help of tried-and-trusted wedding cake expert and #guestlist baker The Vintage Cake Fairy to answer all those worries with her top five tips for choosing your wedding tiers.
Cue the cake…
1. PICK YOUR BAKER CAREFULLY
First things first, you need to think about the style of cake you want and chose the correct baker to fulfil it.
This cake will probably be the most expensive cake you will ever buy, so make sure the design is exactly how you want it.
There are so many great cake makers out there that have different skill sets, so if you want beautiful delicate sugar flowers, or a full on novelty cake, then pick a cake maker that has experience with your desired look.

2. THINK ABOUT YOUR BUDGET
Good cakes are not cheap and cheap cakes are usually not good. You really do get what you pay for.
3. TASTE, TASTE, TASTE
I think you'll all like this part...
At the end of the day, you are buying a cake, a cake that you are serving to your guests, so you need to make sure it tastes good.
You need a good balance of style and substance, not only does it need to look the part it also needs to taste the part, too.

4. IT’S ALL IN THE BASE
If you want a fruitcake tier it doesn’t have to be the bottom one.
A properly stacked and support cake means that you can have a heavy fruitcake on top of the lightest sponge cake without any collapsing issues.
5. DON’T LEAVE IT TILL LAST MINUTE
Cake makers can sometimes book up months, even years in advance, especially during the busy Summer months and other key important dates.
So if you know you would like a certain cake maker get booked in as soon as you can, then you will have peace of mind that your wedding cake is in the safest hands possible.
I usually advise booking around 12-9 months for out of season dates and 16-12 months if your date is a more popular one.
